The sale is done. The settlement's cleared. And now you're staring at a bank balance that doesn't feel entirely real yet.
After years of your net worth being tied up in something you built and controlled, it's suddenly liquid — and that shift is bigger than most people expect. The first 90 days set the tone for everything that follows, and they're worth taking seriously.
Resist the urge to decide everything at once
Many business owners feel pressure to "sort out" the money immediately — pay off everything, buy a property, hand it to the first adviser or accountant who calls. In reality, cash sitting in a term deposit for three to six months while you think clearly costs very little. Rushing into a structure or portfolio that doesn't fit costs a great deal more.
Separate the decisions that are urgent from the ones that aren't
Some things do need attention early — tax obligations arising from the sale itself, any restructuring of trusts or entities, and making sure the funds are held securely. Long-term investment strategy is rarely one of them. Get the urgent, mechanical things sorted first with your accountant and lawyer, then take your time on the rest.
Expect an identity gap
This is less discussed than the financial side, but it's real: your business was likely a significant part of your daily purpose and identity. Many former owners find the first few months financially comfortable but personally disorienting. It's worth planning for what you're moving toward, not just what you're moving away from.
Watch for the people who show up faster than expected
Word travels fast after a settlement. You may hear from advisers, property spruikers, or "opportunities" you didn't seek out. None of this needs an immediate answer. A good adviser will be comfortable with you taking your time and getting a second opinion.
Where to start
A useful first step is simply mapping out what the money needs to achieve — income, growth, a house purchase, supporting family, or a mix — before any product or portfolio conversation happens. That's the conversation we start every client with.
If you've recently sold a business, we'd welcome a no-pressure conversation about your options. Learn more about our business sale and inheritance service or contact our team for a confidential discussion.
